Counter notes for small service points

No theory and no promises. These are the things a counter owner actually gets wrong in the first year, written down so the next person does not repeat them.

A counter is a cash business before it is anything else.

What this site is

A service point is a small business with thin margins and a lot of handling. Most of the trouble comes from three places: commission that was never calculated properly, a cash float that is too small for the busy hours, and records that cannot answer a question three months later.

Each page here takes one of those and works it through with numbers. Nothing on this site is an offer, and no company pays for a mention.

Commission maths

Why a percentage quoted per transaction is not the number that ends up in your pocket.

Cash float

How much to keep at the counter, and what happens on the two days a month when that is not enough.

Records

The smallest set of notes that still answers a question from last quarter.

Who writes this

One person who spent four years behind a counter and now writes it down. Where a number is an estimate, it says so.
